Welcome to the Birchington Neighbourhood Plan pages. Here you will find up to date information about the Plan.

Birchington Neighbourhood Plan 2023

Following six years of hard work by a small team of Parish Councillors and volunteers, the Birchington Neighbourhood Plan went to Referendum on Thursday 26th October 2023. Residents voted overwhelmingly in favour of adopting the Plan. At a meeting of the Thanet District Council on 7th December 2023, the Neighbourhood Plan was formally adopted.

This will mean that in future the Parish Council will have a greater say in planning applications that affect Birchington. Planning applications will have to meet the requirements/standards as set out in the Neighbourhood Plan and this will give much greater protection for the village going forward.

What is a Neighbourhood Plan?

Put simply, a neighbourhood plan is a set of planning policies, developed by local people, that add detail to the planning policies set at national, regional and district level. The Plan, once adopted or “made” by the District Council, becomes part of the Development Plan in the area and must be followed when planning applications for Birchington are considered by the planning authority – Thanet District Council is the planning authority for Birchington.

Who draws up a Neighbourhood Plan?

Birchington parish has been designated a Neighbourhood Plan Area. Parish Councillors and local residents have been working over the last 6 years to gather all the necessary evidence and to test thoughts and ideas in the wider community.

What is the evidence that supports the Plan?

The Plan has been developed since 2016. It takes into account local views expressed through village surveys, public meetings and workshops as well as statutory consultations carried out by the Parish Council and Thanet District Council. All of this is backed up by research and reference to many sources of evidence as well as advice from specialist consultants.
